Located in Üsküdar, Istanbul, at the foot of Küçük Çamlıca Hill, the Kalem Foundation Schools Çamlıca Campus has a construction and architectural philosophy entirely different from commercial towers or hotel projects. The campus was built with a horizontal concept that blends "traditional Turkish-Islamic civil architecture" with the requirements of modern educational buildings, in harmony with the fabric of a protected historical area.
The campus's notable construction and architectural details are as follows:
1. Architectural Concept and Environmental Integration
Horizontal Architecture and Respect for the Silhouette: Due to the fact that the Çamlıca region is located within a protected area and the boundaries of its historical/natural silhouette, vertical masses have been completely avoided in the project. The building has been designed as low-rise, horizontal blocks in a way that will not disrupt the surrounding green areas and the natural structure of Çamlıca.
Traditional Facade Identity (Civil Architecture): The building's exterior displays traces of traditional Turkish house architecture. Wide eaves, vertically lined, wood-look window frames, and bay window-inspired, massive projections are incorporated into the modern reinforced concrete structure, giving the school a warm and institutional "mansion/courtyard" feel.
Selection of Natural Materials: For the exterior shell and perimeter walls, natural stone cladding and environmentally friendly, breathable exterior paints have been preferred, supporting Çamlıca's historical identity.
2. Structural Form and Portable Space Geometry
Modular Classrooms and Open Corridor Axes: Circulation areas (student traffic), a fundamental requirement of educational buildings, have been kept quite spacious. The corridors are designed to maximize the use of daylight, and the windows are arranged with wide construction axes.
Lightweight and Flexible Interior Partitions: The partition walls between classrooms and administrative offices utilize lightweight, sound-insulated drywall and modular partition wall systems that do not impose static loads, allowing for future spatial modifications (classroom enlargement, laboratory conversion, etc.).
3. Static, Soil and Earthquake Safety
Rock Strength: Çamlıca Hill and its slopes have one of the most geologically stable soil formations in Istanbul (mostly quartzite and hard limestone blocks). This provides a significant natural advantage in terms of the building's earthquake safety.
Reinforced Concrete Frame System: Due to its nature as an educational building, the design was based on the highest building importance coefficients ($I=1.5$) in disaster regulations. The load-bearing system consists of a reinforced concrete frame and shear walls constructed using high-ductility, densely reinforced (steel) and high-strength ready-mixed concrete. The foundation structure utilizes a raft foundation system that safely distributes the building load to the rock foundation.
4. Functional Areas and Infrastructure Details
Acoustic Comfort: In classrooms and common areas, perforated plasterboard ceilings or rock wool suspended ceiling panels with high acoustic performance have been used to prevent humming and echoing. Classroom doors and windows also have decibel ($dB$) insulation values to prevent sound from the corridor from entering.
Landscape and Open Space Structure: In the campus construction planning, concrete-covered areas were kept to a minimum; sports fields, event amphitheater, and inner courtyards were incorporated into the landscape architecture while preserving the natural ground structure. Permeable paving stones were used to allow rainwater to seep into the soil.
Safety and Fire Evacuation: In accordance with student evacuation scenarios, uninterrupted, spacious fire escape staircases, fire zones (hallways separated by fire doors), and regulatory-compliant mechanical smoke extraction/sprinkler lines are integrated into the building infrastructure.
